Like my red hued braided tresses

From Continent to Plantation

Cameroon, Guinea to
Carolina, Kansas,
Cheyenne and Denver
You are my roots

From July 24, 1979 to present
You are my roots

From strong Black child
To strong Black woman
You are my roots

Through adversity and pain
Your love and faith remains the same
You are my roots.

From keeping me grounded
While I dream big and fly high
You are my roots

Even in my handicapped boots
You are my roots
